Benjamin Jenkins came to Brecon from Carmarthen as a builder, and set up a building company at Watton Sawmills, Brecon. The first records date back to the mid 1800’s and B Jenkins & Sons was established in 1880.
In those days the building firm relied heavily on the steam sawmills and canal for producing its joinery, and building requirements. Situated on the canal in Brecon, horse drawn barges would make the journey from the docks in Newport and Bristol and delivery essential goods to Brecon.
Benjamin Jenkins built and developed much of Brecon, notable projects are Mount Street Junior school and the Plough Chapel in Brecon, much of Camden road and Coryton Close, Brecon. The company won the contract to the Ministry of defence, after the war effort, to increase the capacity at Sennybridge Army Camp and was employing over 200 people to carry out this work.
B Jenkins and Sons Ltd, became builders merchants in 1980, and still occupy the original premises bought back in 1880 in the heart of Brecon. They continue to serve Brecon and its surrounding towns and villages, with first class building materials, and have developed other sides to the business, including Kitchen and Bathroom sales and a comprehensive Hire Shop.
